In fact with some gags he gets his dad’s comic forte spot on-like the wacky phonecalls to Varun from Satish Kaushik’s voice (we don’t see him) that run like a thread through the film, right till the very end. Rohit Dhawan seems to be getting more at ease in handling a big mainstream entertainer-the larger than life canvas, the action, the helicopter and scooter chases make for full-on filmi fun. All mouthed with the tongue firmly in cheek.Ĭast: John Abraham, Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Saqeeb Saleem, Akshaye Khanna Or dialogue like “Duniya ke kisi bhi kone mein koi ek Hindustani ko haath bhi nahin laga sakta” or “Naukri karta hoon inki, sunta hoon Modi ki”. Be it the hat tip to Sushma Swaraj in the figure of the external affairs minister on the rescue mission. I wasn’t thrown off by the patriotic spiel either because even that is rather kooky. The presence of women as mere arm candy also doesn’t seem so annoying. A reason, perhaps, why in these highly righteous times even a politically incorrect cameo by Akshay Kumar seems more zany than rude. So you have Kabir Shergill (John) of the Special Task Force joining hands with the rookie Junaid Ansari (Varun Dhawan as an Indian cop in the Middle East) who hasn’t even been able to trace a missing dog in his just-begun career.ĭishoom is mad, silly fun and doesn’t take itself seriously for even a minute. The tale of two cops trying to trace India’s leading cricketer (who has gone missing) in a matter of 36 hours, before the crucial India-Pakistan final, may not leave much to our imagination but is consistently amusing. Yet, for most of us aam aurat and aadmi, masala chai is the go to, perk up drink, especially on a wet, rainy day.ĭishoom is the cinematic equivalent of masala chai an all too familiar but giddy infusion.

“There’s no real flavour of tea leaves”, “overwhelming spices”, “too much milk”: the complaints against it can go on and on. Jacqueline doesn't make much of an impression, but does what she is expected to: be around the men as a pleasant distraction. Most self-respecting tea aficionados, who take their cuppa a tad too seriously, have a pet peeve: a brew called masala chai. Dhawan's comic timing calls for much applause. Varun Dhawan's Junaid is affable at times and (deliberately?) annoying at others.

Kabir softens himself only for Junaid, who he develops a soft corner for during the course of the film. He breaks bones with ease, and has a grumpy expression permanently stamped on his face. John Abraham as Kabir is perfect with the gun and punches. The lavishly done helicopter chase deserves a special mention. The screenplay has loopholes, but the story doesn't meander from the course a lot.ĭishoom deserves accolades for the slickly choreographed action scenes. With not too many songs, Dishoom moves at a commendable speed. Rohit Dhawan and Tushar Hiranandani's story is paced well. Their adversary here is betting giant 'Wagah' (Akshaye Khanna), who, much like the India-Pakistan border his code-name echoes, belongs neither here nor there. There's the friendly pickpocket Ishika (Jacqueline Fernandez) too to help these cops get to Viraj. The brothers-in-arms' adventure is marked by twists and turns, and generous doses of laughter. Kabir and Junaid get on the task of delivering Viraj to the stadium during the finals. Enter Junaid (Varun Dhawan), the police's most worthless officer. Kabir meets the police officials in this country and asks for a guide to aid him in Operation Get Viraj. John Abraham (L) and Varun Dhawan in a still from Dishoom
